Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo is one of the biggest family attractions in the Dallas- Fort Worth metro area. And at 95 acres, the zoo can truthfully claim to be “the largest zoological experience in Texas.” Even the giraffe statue that marks the entrance is big. It stands more than 67 feet high. The wildlife population numbers in the thousands. The two main areas that make up the zoo — ZooNorth and the much-acclaimed Wilds of Africa — feature such animals as Galápagos tortoises, crocodiles, kangaroos, African elephants, tigers, chimpanzees, penguins and meerkats. A seasonal monorail running around the Wilds of Africa exhibit offers a bird’s-eye view of wildlife in a variety of habitats, ranging from desert to forest. Other highlights include the Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Center, a gift shop, food court, carousel and a children’s zoo area, complete with pony rides and a petting farm.
The Dallas Zoo was founded in 1888 — the first zoological park in the Southwest.
